It is the week before Thanksgiving, and every tool on Amazon wears a red badge. Black Friday tool deals are real for some tools, but a badge proves nothing unless the product has sold at that price before. This guide covers five tools a car owner will use, and it shows you how to price-check each one before you pay.

Updated — New guide for Black Friday

Quick answer

For Black Friday tool deals, buy only when today’s price matches the lowest point on that exact product’s price-history chart, and start with the NOCO Boost Plus GB40 jump starter (1,000 A peak, 12V), the one tool here almost every driver will use.

Who this guide is for

This guide is for a car owner who wants a few useful tools without paying a reset price, or who is buying for someone who drives.

This is for you if

  • You have a check-engine light, a weak battery or a soft tire to deal with
  • You are buying a gift for a driver and want to check the price first
  • You plan to shop around Black Friday, November 27, 2026, and want a method, not badges

Look elsewhere if

  • You repair cars for a living and need factory-level software
  • You are shopping for a truck owner on a tight budget: see truck gifts under $50 (2026)

What Black Friday tool deals actually discount

Four categories showed up in Black Friday 2025 deal coverage: code readers, tool boxes, jump starters and tire inflators. The table shows where each appeared and the one thing to check before you trust a deal.

Which categories appeared in Black Friday 2025 deal coverage, and what to check first
CategoryWhere it appearedBrands namedCheck first
Code readers and scanners Bob Vila (November 17, 2025); The Drive (November 26, 2025) ANCEL, Autel, VDIAGTOOL, Visdector Whether it reads engine codes only, or ABS and airbag codes too
Tool boxes and rolling storage Bob Vila (November 17, 2025) Craftsman, Milwaukee, DuraTech, WORKPRO Load rating and weather protection
Jump starters The Drive (November 28, 2025); Outdoor Life (November 28, 2025) NOCO, DeWalt, Hulkman, Stanley The engine size it can start
Tire inflators The Drive (November 21, 2025); The Drive (November 28, 2025) Ridgid, NOCO Runtime or duty cycle, not the maximum PSI

Cedar Buy left discount figures out on purpose: they depend on the starting price, which a reset price fakes. Appearing in coverage also does not mean every product in a category dropped. Check one product with the price-check method below.

How Cedar Buy chose these five

Cedar Buy chose these five by what each tool can and cannot do, and by whether its category appeared in Black Friday 2025 coverage.

Cedar Buy’s selection method

  • Cedar Buy read manufacturer-published specifications for all five products in October 2026, plus the dated 2025 coverage linked here.
  • The heaviest criterion was each tool’s fixed limits, because no discount changes them.
  • Cedar Buy excluded products whose Amazon listing it could not confirm, and anything listed as discontinued.
  • Where a maker’s page could not be opened, a distributor repeating the figure was used; anything unconfirmed was left out. Cedar Buy does not physically test products — see Cedar Buy’s editorial policy.

Quick comparison

The table compares the five picks by the spec that limits each one, because a deal cannot change that spec.

What the table does not show

A spec table cannot show whether today’s price is a real deal, so run the price check below. Match the model too: BlueDriver also sells a newer Pro Next Gen.

Tool storage and boxes

For tool storage, buy the box whose load rating beats your heaviest tool set, then check the price. The Craftsman VERSASTACK 20-in rolling tool box (CMST17835) is rated for 100 lb on its Craftsman product page (see Pick 4). Bob Vila’s November 17, 2025 list also named a different VERSASTACK item, so match the model number.

Diagnostic tools

For diagnostic tools, decide first whether your warning light is the engine or something else. The ANCEL AD310 (Pick 2) reads engine codes, and the BlueDriver Bluetooth Pro (Pick 3) adds ABS, airbag, TPMS and transmission codes on supported makes. Both use the OBD-II port on US cars since 1996, as The Drive notes. For a small gift, see stocking stuffers for men who love cars (2026).

Roadside and power

For roadside rescues, a jump starter and a tire inflator cover a dead battery and a soft tire. The NOCO Boost Plus GB40 (Pick 1) starts gas engines up to 6.0 L, and the Fanttik X8 APEX (Pick 5) is a cordless inflator rated to 150 PSI. If you are shopping for a Jeep owner, start with gifts for jeep owners (2026).

NOCO Boost Plus GB40 jump starter — Best overall

The NOCO Boost Plus GB40 jump starter is Pick 1 because it starts the widest range of engines here: gas up to 6.0 L and diesel up to 3.0 L. Both The Drive and CAR Magazine named it in Black Friday 2025 coverage.

Pick 1 — Best overall

  • IP65 with the ports closed
  • Doubles as a USB power bank

Limitations

  • 12V systems only, so it will not start a 24V truck
  • The 1,000 A figure is a peak rating, not a sustained one

Editorial opinion

Get this for a gas car, crossover or half-ton pickup. Skip it for a large diesel: The Drive lists the larger NOCO Boost GB150 as rated up to 9.0 L gas and 7.0 L diesel.

If you want one jump starter in the trunk, this is the one.

ANCEL AD310 OBD2 code reader — Best value

The ANCEL AD310 OBD2 code reader is Pick 2 because it does one job, reading and clearing engine codes, with no batteries. Bob Vila’s early Black Friday 2025 list included it.

  • It shows the code, not the repair

Editorial opinion

Buy it if the check-engine light is your only warning light. If an ABS or airbag light is on, get the BlueDriver instead.

If you only need to read and clear engine codes, this is the one.

BlueDriver Bluetooth Pro OBDII Scan Tool — Premium pick

The BlueDriver Bluetooth Pro OBDII Scan Tool is Pick 3 because it reads enhanced codes (ABS, airbag, TPMS and transmission) on supported makes, not only engine codes. You pay for that with a phone app and a coverage check.

Pick 3 — Premium pick

Limitations

  • Enhanced coverage varies by make, so check the maker’s list
  • Needs a phone; a newer Pro Next Gen model also exists

Editorial opinion

Spend the extra if an ABS, airbag or tire-pressure light has come on. Skip it if the check-engine light is all you see.

If a dashboard light other than the check-engine light is on, this is the one.

Craftsman VERSASTACK 20-in tool box — Best for storage

The Craftsman VERSASTACK 20-in rolling tool box (CMST17835) is Pick 4 because it has a published 100 lb load rating and stacks with other VERSASTACK boxes.

Fanttik X8 APEX tire inflator — Also worth a look

The Fanttik X8 APEX cordless tire inflator is Pick 5 because it needs no power cord, but it only runs as long as its battery: Fanttik states up to 40 minutes.

  • Fanttik states 56 seconds from 28 to 33 PSI

Limitations

  • A dead battery inflates nothing
  • The 56-second figure is a 5 PSI top-off; a flat needs far more air

Editorial opinion

Buy it if you want a compact inflator you charge and forget. Skip it if you want unlimited runtime: a plug-in 12V compressor runs from the car.

If you mainly top off tires, this is the one.

How to tell a real discount from a reset price

A real discount is a price at or near the lowest the product has ever sold for; a reset price is a high starting price that makes an ordinary price look low. Only that product’s price history tells them apart.

1

Find the product’s ASIN

The ASIN is the 10-character code after /dp/ in an Amazon link, such as B01G5EA74I for the ANCEL AD310. Paste it into a tracker like CamelCamelCamel, which charts each ASIN.

2

Compare today with the whole chart

Find the usual price, the lowest price, and how long that low lasted. If today’s price sits near the usual one, it is an ordinary price wearing a sale badge.

3

Check who is selling it

Trackers typically chart the sold-by-Amazon price and third-party prices separately. A low offer from an unknown marketplace seller is not Amazon’s own price.

4

The number everyone checks that barely matters: the crossed-out price

The crossed-out price is whatever the seller picks. The FTC’s pricing guide, 16 CFR Part 233, says a former price should be one the seller actually offered the public regularly for a reasonably substantial period.

Read the line before the banner: a real deal sits at or below the old low, not above the old normal.

What never goes on sale: the spec limits

Nothing is guaranteed never to go on sale, and Cedar Buy will not claim it, because only a price chart shows what a product has done. What a sale never changes is the tool: the NOCO Boost Plus GB40 stays 12V, the ANCEL AD310 stays engine-only, and the Craftsman box stays at 100 lb and IP54.

The BlueDriver stays limited to supported makes, and the Fanttik X8 APEX stays at 150 PSI and up to 40 minutes. Check each limit against your engine, warning light, tool weight and tires before the price matters.

When the good deals actually land

Good deals landed weeks before Black Friday in 2025, and some kept running into the following weekend. Black Friday 2026 falls on November 27, the last Friday of November and the day after Thanksgiving, as CAR Magazine explains.

In 2025, Bob Vila was already covering mechanic-tool deals ahead of Black Friday on October 27, and its November 17 list included code readers and tool boxes. The Drive covered inflators on November 21, scanners on November 26 and NOCO jump starters on November 28, and Bob Vila was still updating its mechanic list on November 29. So check prices weekly from late October through Cyber Monday, November 30, 2026, and if you need a jump starter before winter, price-check it today.

Key terms, explained

Four terms trip up buyers most often.

Plain-language definitions

Reset price
A starting price raised or restated before a sale so an ordinary price looks discounted. On a chart, the “sale” price sits near the old normal.
Peak amps
The largest burst a jump starter can deliver for a moment. The GB40 is rated 1,000 A peak, but its engine limits, 6.0 L gas and 3.0 L diesel, matter more.
OBD-II
The diagnostic port and code system on US cars from 1996 on. Every reader and scan tool here plugs into its 16-pin SAE J1962 socket under the dash.
IP rating
An Ingress Protection rating under IEC 60529. IP54 means dust-protected and splash-resistant, and IP65 means dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets.

Mistakes that cost people money

The most expensive mistake is trusting the crossed-out price instead of the price history.

  1. Trusting the crossed-out priceA strikethrough shows what the seller chose to compare against. Use the price chart instead.
  2. Waiting for Black Friday to buy something you need nowIn 2025, deals were being covered by October 27. A dead battery in November costs more than a missed deal.
  3. Buying an engine-only reader for an ABS lightThe ANCEL AD310 reads engine and emissions codes only. Check which warning light is on first.
  4. Buying a jump starter by peak ampsMatch your engine: the GB40 handles gas to 6.0 L and diesel to 3.0 L.

Frequently asked questions

Is Black Friday a good time to buy tools?

Yes, for code readers, tool boxes, jump starters and tire inflators, which all appeared in Black Friday 2025 deal coverage. It is only a good time if the price matches the product’s history, so check the ASIN on a price tracker first.

When do Black Friday tool deals start?

Early. In 2025, Bob Vila was covering mechanic-tool deals ahead of Black Friday by October 27, a month before the sale day on November 28. Black Friday 2026 is November 27, so start checking prices in late October and keep checking through Cyber Monday, November 30, 2026.

How do I know if a Black Friday price is real?

Look up the product’s ASIN on a price tracker such as CamelCamelCamel and compare today’s price with the usual and lowest prices on the chart. A real deal sits at or near the low. If it sits near the usual price, it is a normal price with a sale badge.

What size jump starter do I need?

Match the starter to your engine. The NOCO Boost Plus GB40 handles gas engines up to 6.0 L and diesels up to 3.0 L at 12V. A larger diesel truck needs a bigger unit, and a 24V system needs a starter built for 24V.

So which one should you buy?

Cedar Buy’s editorial opinion: buy the NOCO Boost Plus GB40 jump starter first, and only after its price chart shows today’s price at or near the low. Add the ANCEL AD310 for engine codes, or the BlueDriver if the warning light is not the engine.
